In Malta pair of hand carved pine frames with new mirrors and backings
In Malta a near – pair of hand carved pine frames with new mirrors and backings. The frames are probably Italian / Sicilian , just possibly Maltese. The frames are ‘ swept ‘ frames and their design contains Venetian / Florentine / Baroque/Rococo elements. The frames date from around 1850 possibly earlier [as attested by the backs of the edges of the frames] and are simplistic with basic shallow carving . The frames have a silver [not gold ]leaf applied to gesso upon pine. The leaf I think due to its age will be real silver leaf. The gilt effect comes from shellac coats which were widely used to turn silver leaf into a gold effect. Some chips to gesso around edges.
